The idea for the Concha Fiesta Medal all started when Amanda Infante instagrammed the famous concha burger, adding the hashtag #dontbeselfconchas. The phrase stuck with the creator of 2017’s wildly popular Paleta Cart Fiesta Medal and the “Don’t Be Self Conchas” Fiesta Medal was born.
A lover of pan dulce, the pink concha is by far Amanda’s favorite and will wind up in her bag whenever making a trip to a panadería. I linked up with Amanda at Bedoy’s Bakery, located on Hildebrand Ave, and soon had an assortment of conchas, empanadas and yo-yos. She was my pan dulce guide as I began adding more sweets to the bag, though my Spanish could use some help—the lady behind the counter busted out laughing at my West Texas accent when trying to say the word “concha,” something that I’ve worked hard to improve on since.
The Concha Fiesta Medal is on sale in the SA Flavor online store, as well as Maddie Mac’s Boutique, Karolina’s Antiques and the Fiesta Commission Store on Broadway. One dollar from every sale goes to SA Youth, a nonprofit dedicated to helping students stay in school and those who’ve quit school to gain a second chance.
“I picked SA Youth as my charity of choice because I feel very that every child in our community should have a chance at achieving success,” Amanda told me. “SA Youth provides all the tools to the children and young adults of our community to do just that. SA Youth’s prime focus is to help young people achieve academic success, develop their character and promote healthy lifestyles. Thanks to SA Youth the children and young adults of our city will have a big bright future.”
