Keeping in SA Flavor’s Lotería Fiesta Medal theme, this year’s medal pays tribute to a time honored tradition of stacking cups at NIOSA. We thought we would put a San Anto spin on the Lotería card “El Borracho” (or “The Drunk”), featuring a stack of cups instead of the stumbling guy with a bottle in the traditional card. The “17” on the top left of the card pays tribute to the fact that this is our 2017 medal, the third in a series of five that features the flavor of San Antonio.
In addition to our two SA Flavor Fiesta Medals (check out our Spurs inspired El Corazon), we’ve partnered with six people in the community to create a total of nine super awesome medals. And what is particularly awesome is each person chooses a charity to donate a dollar from every medal sale!
For every sale of El Borracho, I chose to donate a dollar to Snack Pak 4 Kids. As mentioned in the San Antonio Express News, this organization provides food for area students who “suffer from hunger and [teachers] discreetly slip the packs in the students’ bags every Friday.” It’s tragic that children in our city go to sleep hungry or can’t find food on the weekend—thankfully organizations like this are out there helping in any way possible.
I want to thank the Fiesta Medal Maniacs and the Fiesta Medal community. You guys are awesome and have really embraced me when I first launched the Big Red and Barbacoa medal in 2015! I just love making really cool things and your support has helped me achieve many of my goals!
I also want to thank all the people I have worked with this year—from all my good friends at Kong Screenprinting who have helped with the designs, the people I’m making the medals for (more on who they are in the coming days) and my friends and family who’ve enduring countless hours of brainstorming. A special shout out goes to Jody Newman of Friendly Spot fame who also owns Hills and Dales—thank you so much for letting us have our party out at the place where I met my wife and for providing an awesome pint special that night. Hills and Dales is such a special place and I’m glad that it’s still the “Center of the Universe.”
I’m passionate about making amazing things and I think y’all are all going to be thrilled with what we have in store for you this year and the years to come!
